What is Face Authentication and how does it work?

What is Face Authentication?

Face Authentication allows users to further protect their World ID by ensuring that only the person who was verified at the Orb can access the World ID on the user’s device.

This protects against account takeover attacks and other malicious activity.

How does it work?

When you verify via Orb, the images of your face are stored in an encrypted form on your phone.

We do not get a copy of these images and they are not shared with any third party.

If the images are of sufficient quality, then Face Authentication will automatically be enabled.

Using Face Authentication

The first time you try to use Face Authentication to access your World ID, your phone will first ask for permission to use the camera, and then you should follow the instructions on the screen.

The screen will prompt you if you need to move closer or farther back, or to center yourself on the camera.

Using the phone’s camera, the phone will then compare your face to the encrypted images stored on your phone, and only if it is determined that you are the same person, you will be able to access the World ID. The screen will also let you know if the authentication succeeded or if there was an error.

If the authentication fails, you will be able to retry. If it fails repeatedly, you may have to wait some time before your next retry.

This all happens on your phone. No data leaves your device.
