What is Deep Face and how does it work?

What is Deep Face?

Currently in limited beta, Deep Face uses World ID authentication to protect against malicious deepfakes online.

Built for real-time communication, Deep Face lets you confirm that the person you're speaking with online is a real human, not a deepfake. The other person can easily prove they’re not a deepfake in a few steps using face authentication (Face Auth).

To respond to a Deep Face request, you need World App and an Orb-verified World ID.

Where is Deep Face available?

Deep Face is available in beta as a Mini App in World App. More integrations with video and chat platforms are coming this summer.

Stay tuned for updates — follow our social media channels to hear when new ways to use this feature become available.

How can I use Deep Face?

1. Open Deep Face in World App and initiate a request by choosing how to confirm the other person isn't a deepfake. You can choose to confirm by checking a match against an image of the face you see, checking a match against the other person's World App username, or both.

2. If you are choosing to confirm with a face image, you will be asked to upload a photo or screenshot of the person you are seeing. If you are choosing to confirm with their World App username, enter it and tap Confirm to send the request.

3. Once the request is created, you can send it via link or by sharing a QR code with the other person.

4. After the other person opens the link or scans the QR code for the request, World App opens on the other person’s phone and prompts them to accept the request.

5. If they accept the request, the other person completes a face authentication process. Face Auth is an added layer of security within World App that ensures a World ID can only be used by the person who created it.

If Deep Face is matching a face image, it compares:

  • The image uploaded for the request to the other person’s World ID personal custody package, which includes encrypted images taken at the Orb, and stored on their phone; and
  • A live image from their camera (Face Auth) to the other person's World ID personal custody package.

This matching confirms the other person is a real human (encrypted images from the Orb), present (Face Auth), and that the live image of their face matches the face you are seeing (provided image).

If Deep Face is matching a World App username, it compares:

  • The username you provided matches exactly to the other person's World App username; and
  • A live image from the other person's camera (Face Auth) to their World ID personal custody package.

This matching confirms the other person is a real human (encrypted images taken by the Orb and stored on their device), present (Face Auth), and they are the person holding that World App username.

In each case, a Face Auth live confirmation happens. This entire process happens locally on the other person's phone—no personal data leaves their device.

6. If Deep Face successfully matches the image and/or username, then the other person receives a confirmation they can share with you to prove they're not a deepfake.

While anyone can initiate a Deep Face request in World App, currently only Orb-verified World ID holders can respond to a Deep Face request as it is matching the encrypted and locally stored images taken by the Orb.

Best Practices and Troubleshooting

When you send a request

  • If you are choosing to confirm with a face image, upload a clear image of the person’s face. The image should have good lighting with the person’s eyes open.

When you receive a request

  • Follow the Face Auth prompts in a timely manner.
  • If you fail to pass, the request may have timed out or there was an unexpected error. You will receive a prompt to try again.
  • If you see a prompt that says you could not be matched, you can tap “Try Again.” Go through the Face Auth process one more time.
  • If you fail to match a second time, it may be that the image provided was not clear enough. The person who initiated the Deep Face request will need to start over and provide a better image.
